Mother Nature
According to definitions.net “Kansas was named after the Kansas River which flows through it, which in turn was named after the Kansa Native American tribe, which inhabited the area. The tribe’s name is often said to mean “people of the wind” or “people of the south wind,” although this was probably not the terms original meaning.” Which could have been derived due to the mass amounts of tornadoes that earned Kansas the nickname ‘Tornado Alley’. While ducksters.com tells us, Missouri was named after the Native American tribe the Missouri and meant big canoe river or Town of canoes.
The New Madrid Fault zone that runs through Missouri is active and averages more than 200 measured seismic events per year, according to sccmo.org. Extending approximately 120 miles southward from the area of Charleston Missouri and Cairo Illinois, through New Madrid and Caruthersville, following interstate 55 to Blytheville, then to Marked Tree Arkansas. It crosses 5 state lines and cuts across the Mississippi River in 3 places and the Ohio River in 2 places.
Missouri is frequently visited by natural disasters. Ice storms, tornadoes, severe storms and flooding are all common in the state of Missouri. With an average of 18 to 24 inches of snowfall and 40 to 45 inches of rainfall per year. 206 sunny days per year is the Missouri average and -40 degrees Fahrenheit is the lowest recorded temp in Missouri with 118 degrees for the highest recorded temp, both in Warsaw. Although floods along the Missouri River occur quite often, there have been 6 major floods recorded with the last one occurring in 1993; as listed in the Missouri Digital Heritage.
